Dunvegan Castle // South Wing
As part of Eglantine by Margaret Salmon, ATLAS Arts is pleased to invite you to a special evening screening of The Spirit of the Beehive by Victor Erice preceded by two short films by Margaret Salmon; Bird (2016) and Enemies of the Rose (2010) in Dunvegan Castle’s South Wing.
Made under the Franco regime, Victor Erice’s astonishing 1973 debut is one of the most remarkable, influential and poignant films to emerge from the 1970s. The Spirit of the Beehive is set in a rural 1940s Spanish village and follows the story of a young girl named Ana, who after viewing James Whale’s Frankenstein at a travelling cinema becomes so fascinated with the character that she is on a mission to find him. Instead, she finds a wounded army deserter and transfers her fascination to him. Her ageing father, played by Fernando Fernan Gomez, is emotionally scarred by the regime and spends his time tending his beehives while her mother dreams of distant lovers. It is a unique film that is powerfully symbolic of the emotional disintegration of the Spanish nation during the Civil War.
