Caroline Bergvall is an internationally renowned, London-based Norwegian artist, writer and performer. Her work spans art forms, media and languages. The recipient of numerous awards and commissions including the Centre Pompidou’s prestigious Prix Litteraire Bernard Heidsieck Prize, Bergvall’s work frequently develops through exploring material traces, literary documents and linguistic detail, language and literary history, sites and histories, hidden or forgotten knowledges. Her sparse textual, spatial and audio works often expose hidden or difficult historical/political events. One of Bergvall’s widely praised works is her book and collaborative performance Drift (for voice, electronic text and percussion) (2014-16), which combined a rewriting of the Anglo-Saxon poem ‘The Seafarer’ alongside reports from sea migrants and refugees from recent years.
Gavin Bryars studied philosophy but became a jazz bassist and pioneer of free improvisation with Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley. Early iconic pieces ‘The Sinking of the Titanic’ and ‘Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet’ achieved great popular success. Works include five operas, a large body of chamber music, several concertos and vocal music. He has collaborated widely with visual artists (Juan Muñoz, Bruce McLean), choreographers (William Forsythe, Merce Cunningham, Edouard Lock, David Dawson, Carolyn Carlson), theatre directors (Robert Wilson, Atom Egoyan), as well as writing music for the films of his wife Anna Tchernakova. Since 1986 he has performed internationally and recorded with the Gavin Bryars Ensemble. He is aTranscendent Satrap and a Regent of the Collège de ’Pataphysique and has made many recordings – for ECM, Point, Philips, Naxos, Decca, and his own label GB Records.
Peyee Chen is a soprano with a particular interest in contemporary and Baroque music. Appearances as a soloist include the Gavin Bryars Ensemble, Adelaide Festival, and Edinburgh Contemporary Music Ensemble. She is an ad hoc member of the BBC Singers, EXAUDI, and Schola Heidelberg, with recent engagements including the BBC Proms, Spitalfields Festival, Ruhrtriennale, and Aldeburgh Festival with BCMG and Oliver Knussen.
Chen works regularly with young composers and has given guest lectures and workshops on writing for voice at University of Huddersfield and University of York. She received her BMus degree from Northwestern University, USA, in 2008, and her MA (with distinction) from University of York, UK, in 2010.
Sam Grant is a sound artist, musician and record producer based in the North East of England. His work in the arts has seen him involved with exhibitions through Northern Europe, and as a performing musician (guitar) he has extensively toured Europe. His production credits cover a catalogue of over 50 commercial releases across a range of genres from noise to pop. Grant currently runs, and operates from, leading North East recording studio Blank Studios.
Verity Susman is a composer and performer, writing music for film, dance, concert performance and artist collaboration. She also plays live and makes records, previously with her band Electrelane and more recently as a solo artist, guest musician and free improviser.
