NEO NEO Extreme Past

NEO NEO Extreme Past, was an offsite ATLAS project. An exhibition featuring artists In the Shadow of the Hand, Niall Macdonald, Sophie Morrish, Bobby Niven and Hanna Tuulikki, the project built on a curatorial relationship between Emma Nicolson, ATLAS Director and artist/curator Gayle Meikle.

Taking over the Pig Rock Bothy in the grounds of the Modern One, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, NEO NEO //Extreme Past offered a chance to re-present work commissioned by ATLAS Arts. The work on show had been made in response to archaeological sites across the Hebridean islands of Skye and North Uist, and in this new context offered scope for further, and more diverse, dialogue.

Alongside the exhibition, NEO NEO //Extreme Past utilised the Pig Rock Bothy as a venue to host a varied engagement programme, including talks, screenings and practical workshops. Through conversations with the exhibiting artists, academics and research groups, NEO NEO //Extreme Past aimed to create a space in which to unpick the ways in which artists explore extreme past in relation to their practice and specific sites, whilst encouraging wider conversations of material culture and the anthropocene.
