Broad Reach | Artist Rooms exhibition – Vija Celmins

Programmed as part of the cross-island Broad Reach project, this very special exhibition brought the eminent ARTIST ROOMS collection to the Uists for the first time – showing the work of artist Vija Celmins.

Celmins is best known for her intricate, monochromatic drawings of a select range of subjects. In 1966 she began to use photographs as the subject for her works, creating what she described as ‘impossible images’, which remind us of the complexity of the simplest things. This exhibition explored her meticulous renderings of the surface of the ocean, the vastness of the night sky and her fascination with the microscopic detail of a spider’s web.

ARTIST ROOMS On Tour is a partnership with Arts Council England, the Art Fund, and in Scotland, Creative Scotland, making available the ARTIST ROOMS collection of international modern and contemporary art to galleries throughout the UK.

ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland and was established through the d’Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund and the Scottish and British Governments.
