A publication making day at Dunvegan Hall, celebrating community publishing and the magic of making books. Drop in and out, with a free lunch, and activities for the whole family.
Learn how to use The Making Publics Press, our mobile publication studio, before it takes up residence at the new Dunvegan Tool Library from 23 Nov-19 Jan 2026, and see the amazing ways Dunvegan’s new community action plan has been published.
SCHEDULE:
11am: Kids community book making with Gaelic translator, map maker and small press publisher Raghnaid Sandilands. Make your own books and share your voice in a publication. Includes a sharing of a new community action plan book made by Dunvegan primary pupils. [Parents/carers to accompany children.]
12 – 1pm: Lunch for all, by donation
1pm: Alice Prentice, Creative Community Builder and founder of Isle of Riso, opens an afternoon celebrating the joy of print, zine-making and community publishing. Beginning with a short talk about running Isle of Riso, a small-scale print and design studio now approaching its fifth year, she’ll share stories of collaboration, creative risk-taking and how the studio’s Drink and Draw and Sketchbook Club events have helped build a thriving creative community in Inverness. The talk will explore why accessible, everyday creativity matters and how independent publishing can bring people together.
2pm-4pm: Tea, coffee, cake and book making drop in and get hands-on, learning how to bind a book with the Making Publics Press – ATLAS Arts’ mobile book making studio. With an intro from Mali McLennan about Dunvegan’s new community action plan publication, music and poetry.
From 2pm, guided by Alice and the ATLAS team, participants can:
- Bind a sketchbook from risograph misprints, transforming colourful offcuts and scraps into a one-of-a-kind take-home creation.
- Co-create a community zine using printed prompts and shared drawings, capturing the creativity of everyone taking part.
- Bind, add to and explore Dunvegan’s new Community Action Plan publication(s), which is being published on the day.
This session is about making for yourself and with others. There’s no pressure, no “right way” to do it. Stay for five minutes or the whole afternoon, make something simple or intricate, and enjoy a relaxed, social atmosphere with tea, coffee and cake.
With huge thanks to the Foyle Foundation for their support.
