A Sonic Journey into the World of Spin

Commissioned as part of the wider Spincycle-Skye project, artists and musicians Jason Singh and David Littler from the international collective sampler-cultureclash produced Spincycle: A Sonic Journey into the World of Spin.

Building on a week-long residency period, during which Jason and David met with and learnt about the culture of textile, music and cycling in Skye from an array of spinners, weavers, knitters, singers, musician and cyclists based on the island, Spincycle: A Sonic Journey into the World of Spin was developed. Presented at the 2013 Skye Bike Fest, the work was a dynamic performance combining the skills of all those that they met during their residency. Creating a sonic laboratory’ the performance explored circular and periodic motion and cycles, examining and utilising all things that rotate, repeat, oscillate and spin.

Taking the ethos of sampler-cultureclash – international collective of visual and sonic artists, DJ’s, embroiderers, and electronic machine hackers – to explore connections between textiles and sound, Singh and Littler worked with a host of special guests from the local area to perform for a sell-out audience at Portree High School.
