The Haunted Sea: Sophia Kingshill

Twenty-five new pieces of writing have been commissioned to accompany the project First There is a Mountain’, corresponding to each beach location. Katie Paterson has invited Sophia Kingshill to write for Glenbrittle Beach. Her text, The Haunted Sea, will be read out as part of the event. The diverse writings connect with each locality, relating the artwork to the place, its people, its history and the wider geological context.

When we stand on the shore, we are on the edge of a different world: the world of the sea, where mysteries lie concealed. Old stories told of an inconceivably huge beast that swam deep below the surface, a beast called the Kraken.
