Within View: René Jansen

Within View by René Jansen

As part of ATLAS Editions, photographer René Jansen was commissioned to create a series of digital photographic prints. Inspired by a number of iconic Skye locations, but taking a focus on an alternative, inconspicuous beauty that exists within the wider scenic splendor of the Skye landscape’, Jansen visited sites ubiquitous with photographic representation of the Isle of Skye. Capturing these in a new, unique way, often from unexplored angles and perspectives, Jansen created three limited edition prints, each produced in an edition of twenty-five.

Inspired by the visual style of the Dutch Masters’ etchings, the resulting photographs have been produced as archival pigment prints on 350gsm, Hahnemühle Museum Etching paper. Each location photographed is identified by their geographical coordinates.

In my work I aim to reflect something of the essence of a place explored, to convey the feeling and experience of finding and appreciating beauty in hidden, small details or unusual perspectives within nature. Renowned for its unique and dramatic landscape, Skye presented a challenge. Over a number of visits, I travelled the island, walking and exploring with my camera. The resulting series Within view’, comprises three images from the body of work produced. Each image reveals an alternative, inconspicuous beauty that exists within the wider scenic splendour of the Skye landscape.’ Jansen
