On Tidal Zones Residency 2021

In 2021 Hayley Wolcott joined us as one of two transdisciplinary residencies with the CLIMAVORE team, intended to expand conversations on regenerative aquacultures and the social and ecological space of the intertidal zone.

Supported by an artist fee and production budget, the residencies supported artists and researchers to work in their own locales ; exploring alternative ecologies, pedagogies and economies of the tidal region.

Hayley Wolcott is a marine biologist and printmaker living on the Isle of Skye. Her lino prints are inspired by her keen interest in the natural world, often highlighting the flora, fauna, and geology of her surroundings.

Having grown up in New England, she has a strong connection with the Atlantic Coast and its numerous organisms. She hopes her work can encourage others to explore the outdoors and to investigate the biological and physical elements that make up their surroundings.

Her previous research has focused on climate science, animal behaviour, endangered wildlife populations, fisheries research, and aquaculture, having worked with numerous research groups across several countries.

She also works with CLIMAVORE CIC supporting their research of closed loop intertidal polyculture site.

Workshop with Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh

Hayley led a workshop with a group of 18 children in P6 and 7 from Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Phort Rìgh, exploring the intertidal zone around the Bayfield Shore.

Together we learned how to identify different species that can be found along the shoreline, aided by a specially designed linocut worksheet series on intertidal zone.

Through this, the group was then encouraged to explore the intertidal area to see what sort of seaweeds, shells or thriving life they could themselves find.

AN AIRD, BRAES Rocky Shore walk

On the intertidal zone, Hayley, wearing a red coat stands in front of a group of people listening to her speak. It is a partially cloudy day and people are wrapped up warm.

On Saturday 30th October we explored the rocky shores around An Aird, Braes with CLIMAVORE: On Tidal Zones researcher in residence Hayley Wolcott.

We learned how to identify different species that live along our coastlines, and heard more about Hayley’s residency, and printmaking practice. We shared a warming cup of dulse hot chocolate and everyone who attended got to take hope a specially commissioned print series made by Hayley.

Queen Margaret University Gastronomy Students

On Monday 1st of November Hayley led a visit by students and faculty from Gastronomy department at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh exploring edible species on the intertidal zone at An Aird Braes.
