Join us for the launch of Body Bound, a collaboration between CLIMAVORE and ATLAS Arts, featuring Miriam Brett from Common Wealth.

Coastal environments have provided materials such as seashells, shell-lime and seaweeds for millennia, which have been used for the construction of roads, foundations, floors, walls, and roof technologies within Skye and beyond. The development of these novel techniques is of growing importance, as they use materials with a minimal carbon footprint providing alternatives to cement. CLIMAVORE is recuperating and repurposing local food waste to develop a new composite material, with the aim of developing building and interior materials using products from the coast of Skye made almost entirely from waste seashells.

Working with Ewan Thompson and Martin Macpherson, CLIMAVORE have created seashell terrazzo tiles from crushed oyster, mussel and scallop shells, and shell-based lime. These unique waste tiles will be presented to our restaurant partners.

The event will also feature guest speaker Col Gordon. Col is a farmer’s son, from Easter Ross with an interest in indigenous land practices and traditional foodways. He’s a director of Scotland the Bread and The Shieling Project and narrated and co-produced the acclaimed podcast series Landed” by Farmerama.

Dulse soup, seaweed scones and light refreshments will be served.
