Atlas Arts & Wasps Joint Residency

ATLAS Arts and WASPS Artists Studios collaborated to offer a six-week residency to Martin Campbell at The Admiral’s House, in the Isle of Skye, marking the opening of the new addition to WASPS’ portfolio of artist studios across Scotland.

The Admirals House is a former black house donated to WASPS by the family of Vice-Admiral Sir Roderick (Roddy) Macdonald KBE. As well as serving as a naval officer, Admiral Roddy was a keen amateur artist. His home has been redeveloped by WASPS to create a living space and three studios located around the property’s grounds.

Campbell was invited to undertake the residency in the summer of 2017. Alongside the fully funded project offering him time and space to develop his practice, he was also invited to collaborate and mentor local craftsman, Ewan Thomson to develop a new ATLAS Edition. Together they have been exploring found materials in Skye and developing woodworking techniques that are sympathetic to found materials such as maerl, plastic and shells.
