From Spin to Spin

From Spin to Spin is a collection of sound-pictures created by Bristolian graphic-designer and photographer Nick Hand. Commissioned by ATLAS to embark on a circular journey around the Isle of Skye, taking in the adjacent areas of mainland Lochalsh, this project the penultimate component of the wider ATLAS project Spincycle-Skye’.

The sound-pictures created by Hand record a number of the artisans he met throughout his journey; from local ceramicists to the ferryman operating the turn-table ferry on the crossing between Kylerea and mainland Glenelg, which was once a part of the Old Drove Road to the Highlands and often referred to as The Road to the Isles. These intimate portraits of the skilled crafts people in the region build upon Hand’s other journeys, through his personal project Slowcoast. Developed during a two-week tour of the area, cycling, camping and enduring some horrible weather – Hand captured much of his adventure on his own blog.

Below are a selection the sound-pictures created.
