We are looking for creative submissions for Marion (a new once-a-year publication) launching in December 2026, guest edited by Daniel Cullen and designed by Caitlin of Sona Design. Built as a space to be heard, tell a good story, entertain, rage, open up a conversation, share and show what is happening here.
At this stage you can submit either a completed piece or a pitch of an idea, if your pitch is selected we will ask you to work it up and complete it for the 29 September.
What to submit, we are open to:
Writing fiction/fact (with a guide maximum of 3000 words)
Photography
Poetry (with a guide maximum of 3000 words)
Visual Art
Comics
Extracts from scripts, plays etc
Interviews and creative contributions
These can be existing works or something new specially made for Marion from the people of Skye, Raasay and Lochalsh. We will accept either completed works or, where appropriate, we will commission ideas from a pitch. If in any doubt contact us to see if we can consider it.
It is important to us that those submitting do so in the spirit of the publication. Mischief, humour, protest, lived experience, fact fiction and a blurring of the two, the good old days, the present… feel free to run with this and keep going as far as you can.
If selected for publication you will receive payment of £366.40 for new works and £200 for existing works that have been published, exhibited or formally shared previously.
Submissions are welcome in either Gaelic or English and will be looked through and chosen by a small panel that have a background in publishing, writing, the arts, teaching and theatre.
How to submit
Submissions should be sent by 31 August 10 am. If you would rather submit another way let us know and we can see what works best.
Tell us if your submission is a pitch or a completed piece
Submit in word/pdf or jpg/png format by email to marion@atlasarts.org.uk . We also accept wetransfer but please email to say you have sent one as they often go to junk mail.
Drop into the office or catch us on the road, at the pub or in the shop if you have an idea you might want to submit.
We accept both previously published submissions and pieces created for Marion and pitches for ideas that can be worked up, texts with a guide maximum of 3000 words.
What will happen to your work
Contributions will be published alongside 15-25 other works.. The publication will be made in short runs and on demand here in Skye on the Making Publics Press.
There will be a publication launch on 21 Dec and we hope that it will be stocked locally and further afield in book shops, newsagents and other places.
The fee is a recognition of the cost associated with the submission process and not intended to be an artist fee or for purchasing of work. All copyrights remain with the person who created the work.
All proceeds from sales of Marion go directly back to pay for next year's edition and further print runs.
Access
You do not need to have any formal training, have gone to school/uni or consider yourself to be a writer or artist, we are more interested in what you have to say or what you are making informally. Submissions can be written, drawn or if you would like to send an audio file that we can transcribe that is welcome too.
Other ways to get involved and find out more
To coincide with the open call we are running a few informal and sometimes impromptu get-togethers as a way of introducing the publication, answering questions and meeting new folk, during these sessions we are also looking for some creative input on how we shape the publication this year and onwards. Please join us if you see us about and point creative folk you know in our direction. These will be popping up at Gala days, pubs and cafes so keep an eye out or if you think we should visit you give us a shout.
Preorder
Marion will be available for preorder via our online shop, copies ordered by the 17 Dec will be mailed out in time for Christmas if sending within the UK.
All money made from sales of Marion will be used to fund further editions.
