Duilich, chan eil seo ri fhaighinn ach sa Bheurla an-dràsta.

Join us for a collaborative writing and observation workshop with Ania Boryslawska and Malcolm Mackenzie in Portree Harbour as we explore our own relationships with the water, and the role the sea plays in connecting us across and with different people, places and communities.

We’ll be exploring how time spent on and by the water can shift our perspectives and encourage different ways of thinking, doing and being through a series of guided observation, writing and filming exercises.

Details of the day

10.30 – 12.00 Coffee, welcome and introduction. Settling-in and observation exercises on the shore led by Malcolm and Ania.

12.00 – 13.00 Lunch (bring a packed lunch).

13.00 – 15.00 Writing / Observing collaborative workshop. In pairs alternating activities on the shore, and in a rowing boat on the water.

15.00 – 16.00 tea break and coming together to share.

Notes on Access

The morning workshop will begin at the slipway down to the shore on Beaumont Crescent. Activities take place over uneven, slippy and gradually sloping ground.

Afternoon activities include boarding a Plockton local rowing boat either from the shoreline or by pontoon. This may require walking into the water to access the boat and stepping into the boat from there.

Please wear suitable footwear for uneven ground, and dress for the weather. Bring along a spare pair of shoes you don't mind getting wet, such as old trainers. Should there be adverse weather warnings the workshop will be cancelled and participants notified.

Parking: there is limited parking at the Harbour. Details of other parking around Portree can be found via our general access page.

Public toilets are located at the pier and cost 50p.

A hearing loop can be made available on the day. If you require this please let us know on booking.

We endeavour to ensure our events can be accessed in a whole range of ways. If we can make it easier to take part in anything we do, or if you have any feedback or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with admin@atlasarts.org.uk

About the project

From Plockton to Portree (opens in new tab) is a boat project with Malcolm Mackenzie bringing people together to explore stories and relationships with the sea.

In the summer of 2022, Malcolm invites people to join him on and by the sea in a series of activities leading towards the building of two new coastal rowing skiffs and the re-staging of a race between Plockton and Portree.

Part of the Culture Collective network, the project is supported by ATLAS and SEALL and will take place across Skye and Lochalsh over 2022 – 23.
