Cruthaich (Create) is a year-long, artist-led series of visual arts workshops primarily aimed at young Gaelic-speakers from high-school age up to 25.
The focus will be on exploring processes and skills in a variety of artistic disciplines, learning about Gaelic seasonal knowledge, and on using Gaelic in a supportive environment. Each session will also provide a unique experience to learn more about place and culture through creativity, and engaging participants in deepening their understanding of language, place and culture.
Workshop themes will be based around traditional Gaelic knowledge of seasonality, ecology, environment, weather and work practices reflecting indigenous knowledge specific to the local communities, and taking inspiration from Ronald Black’s series of ‘Quern-dust Calender’ articles to inform a broader cultural understanding of place.
The artists;
Angela NicIllebhràighe is a photographer and artist who uses materials of place to produce work rooted in the Gaelic landscape and in the history and stories of her island community. She particularly enjoys the experimental and reciprocal nature of alternative photographic processes and using natural dyes, which encourage curiosity and a noticing.
@nicillebhraighe
Gwen NicGuaire is an experienced Gaelic educator and visual artist. Her art reflects the harmony between nature’s elements and the ever-changing island light that surrounds her living on Skye.
