Atlas Arts

Nicky Bird

Nicky Bird holds a BA Fine Art from Bristol Polytechnic and a MA Feminism and the Visual Arts from the University of Leeds. In 1994 she undertook a practice-led PhD at Leeds University and since then has explored the contemporary relevance of found photographs, the hidden histories of archives and specific sites. Nicky is interested in a key question: what is our relationship to the past, and what is the value we ascribe to it?

Employing various techniques, she is interested in creating artworks that make visible the process of collaboration. She is particularly interested in collaborations with people who have significant connections to materials originally found in archives. In 2008 Nicky received a major Stills photographic commission for the project Beneath the surface / Hidden Place. Alongside residencies, exhibitions, and contributions to arts journals, Nicky is currently a part-time PhD Co-Coordinator at the Glasgow School of Art.
