Growing up on the Isle of Skye gave me the possibility to enjoy making and unmaking things. Having artists and architects around meant good design was not just affordable but necessary and new design was something to look forward to. Working doing boat building and repairs, as well as the occasional bit of film and TV or construction work, allowed me a glimpse into these worlds which are completely different.

The idea of making something for a few days only, that cannot be reused, or building something that will not last is alien to me. As is the volume of waste generated from time constraints, poor design and workmanship, which I still struggle to comprehend. These experiences have helped me realise the value that can be created from good design.
