Ellie Harrison (b. 1979) was born in London and studied Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University, Goldsmiths College and the Glasgow School of Art. Harrison’s work takes a variety of forms including; installations, performances, events, lectures, live broadcasts and political campaigns. Using an array of strategies, Harrison investigates, exposes and challenges the absurd consequences of our capitalist system; from over-consumption, inequality and alienation, to privatisation and climate change – and explores the impact free-market forces are having on our society, and our individual day-to-day lives.
In 2010, she became the first individual artist to publish an environmental policy on her website. After breaching its transportation section ‘for love or money’ on several occasions, in 2016 she took the extreme step of not travelling in any vehicles (other than her bike) for a whole year, as part of her ‘controversial’ project The Glasgow Effect.
