View projectPeace Camp | Cultural Olympiad 2012
Peace Camp, a project initiated as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad celebrating Britain and Northern Ireland’s love poetry and extensive coastline. ATLAS served as the local partner on the project which was a collaboration between theatre director Deborah Warner, actor Fiona Shaw and creative producer Artichoke. Working in Portree High School, the project saw pupils create a tent in response to ‘place’ incorporated peat-covered poetry panels; love tokens made from trees native to Skye and ropes made from local grasses, rushes and moss entwined with poetry tags, with the help of local artist Caroline Dear and the 2012 Sabhal mor Ostaig‘s poet-in-residence, Padraig MacAoidh.

Colm Cille’s Spiral, a series of contemporary art and literature commissions and dialogues rethinking the legacy of sixth century Irish monk Colm Cille (St Columba). For this project, ATLAS worked with Glasgow School of Art and others to produce Convocation a residency period and exhibition with a group of scholars and artists, making work which engaged with the extreme past.

Talking Art Series was a programme of artists’ talks presented as a Saturday afternoon lecture series in Portree. The talks brought a variety of artists, with a range of practices, to the Isle of Skye to discuss their creative approaches to making work – with a particular focus on making work in the public realm. Over the course of two years, ATLAS worked with a number of artists such as Nicky Bird, Chris Dooks, Graham Fagan and Frances Priest to encourage critical engagement with contemporary art.
