We are delighted to be showing work by internationally renowned Belgium filmmaker Chantal Akerman. Since the age of 15, when she decided to be a filmmaker, Akerman has led a nomadic lifestyle moving to New York then Israel, Eastern Europe, China and Mexico. Innovative, provocative and experimental, her films span genres including, documentaries, fiction and in one case a commercial comedy staring Juliette Binoche.
From The Other Side is a documentary film from 2002, exploring the plight of Mexicans crossing the desert into the United States. Akerman interviews people whose family members and friends have attempted the harrowing journey in which many people die of dehydration, heat exhaustion, or shot by the drug cartels.
‘A spare, painterly and scrupulously unsentimental look. Both eerily beautiful and filled with a quiet compassion.’ – Dave Kehr, The New York Times
